Dotonbori is the beating heart of Osaka's Minami district, a canal-side entertainment zone that has been drawing revellers, diners and theatre-goers for over four centuries. Running parallel to the Dotonbori River between Namba and Nipponbashi, the street is lined with enormous illuminated signs, oversized food mascots and restaurants serving the city's signature dishes: takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu and more. The Glico running man sign overlooking Ebisu Bridge is one of the most photographed landmarks in Japan. Beyond the food, Dotonbori offers riverside promenades, canal cruises, theatres and a buzzing nightlife that carries well into the early hours. The area is at its most spectacular after dark, when the neon reflections dance on the water and the crowds reach their peak. During major festivals and sporting victories, fans famously leap from the bridges into the canal in celebration. No first visit to Osaka is complete without a stroll through Dotonbori.
