法善寺 金毘羅天王

Hozenji is a Jodo-sect Buddhist temple founded in 1637 and one of Namba's most cherished spiritual landmarks, tucked down a quiet lane just steps from the neon bustle of Dotonbori. Its best-known feature is the Mizukake Fudo, a stone statue of the wrathful deity Fudo Myoo completely cloaked in soft green moss from centuries of worshippers pouring water over it in prayer. Surviving the Osaka air raids of 1945 with only the Fudo intact, the temple was partially rebuilt in the post-war years, including the Konpira hall that gives this listing its name. The Konpira-do enshrines Konpira Daigongen, a deity widely venerated for safe journeys and prosperity, and the temple also holds a place as the 48th station on the Osaka New Forty-Eight Vows pilgrimage. Visitors can receive goshuin stamps, offer water to the Fudo, and experience a rare pocket of stillness amid Minami's entertainment district. The surrounding Hozenji Yokocho alley retains its old-Osaka atmosphere with lantern-lit eateries lining the approach. A visit here offers a moment of calm and cultural depth that contrasts beautifully with Dotonbori's excess.
