Nipponbashi Bridge is a historic crossing over the Dotonbori canal, originally built during the Edo period when the Dotonbori waterway was first excavated. In its early days, the bridge served as a vital hub for both land and water transport, falling under the direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate. The bridge's approach, known as Nagamachi, was lined with inns catering to travellers, and a boat landing at the bridge's end made it a bustling nexus of commercial activity. The current bridge is a modern girder structure completed in 1969, measuring 28.8 metres in length and 28 metres in width. It carries Sakaisuji (the old Kishu Kaido highway) across the Dotonbori river and sits near the Nippombashi station on the Sakaisuji and Sennichimae subway lines, approximately 200 metres from the station's sixth exit. The surrounding Nipponbashi district has evolved over the centuries from a post town to a used bookstore quarter and finally into the electronics and pop culture hub known colloquially as Den-Den Town. For visitors walking between Dotonbori and Nipponbashi, this bridge offers a tangible connection to Osaka's mercantile past. It is a quiet but meaningful landmark for those who appreciate the layers of history beneath the city's modern surface.
